Typically what I hear is 'I don't know how to cook!' or 'what do you eat?'. Today I got a new one. Someone said to me that when they go to the grocery store there's never anything to buy so they pretty much always eat the same thing. I couldn't wrap my head around that so I whipped out my phone to scroll through all my food pics and asked him what if anything had I shown him that looked exotic or something that he'd never seen. Of course there was nothing. Meats, pastas, soups, veggies, fruit, beans... Granted I do the majority of my shopping at the farmer's market but all the items can still be found in a grocery store.
I realized what he was really saying is 'I only know a few ways to prepare a few items so I eat the same thing all the time.' Basically when he goes shopping, he's starting from a place of boredom so nothing excites him.
The way to break this cycle is the same way I answer the typical conundrum of not knowing what or how to cook... follow a recipe.
Go online to search any food item and tons of preparations appear so all you have to do is prop up that iPad and follow along. My favorite of course is going to a bookstore to buy a few cookbooks. I've never paid more than $10 for one (Barnes and Noble always have some on clearance) and I have tons of recipes to sample and play with. This way I'm not eating the same dish all the time unless I choose to, not because it's all I know.
Whenever I buy a new cookbook I immediately flip through all the pages and put little stickies on the ones I know I want to try. Believe me, none of them are complicated but you can get as gourmet as you like.
No one can use the excuse of not knowing how to cook something when it's as simple as following a recipe. And there's never any reason to be bored with your food when there's so many options for everything!
So get cooking!!
